Coping with winter driving

COPING WITH WINTER DRIVING

Winter roads in the UK can be really daunting and challenging, especially in icey and snowy conditions. As a result accidents are a lot more common during this time of the year. Here are a few tips on how to stay safe!

Tyres

  • All-season tyres or winter tyres are made from a special rubber that gives better grip in cold, wet conditions.
  • Letting air out of your tyres to get more grip does not work and is actually unsafe.
  • Using snow chains can improve grip dramaitcally. But they can casue damage to the road when there is not enough not enough snow.
  • It is recommended to have at least 3mm of tread for the winter.

Visibility

  • Make sure all lights are working and lenses clean.
  • Don’t forget the front and back lights in snowy condtions.
  • Use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced.
  • You might have to clean your lights after every trip if the roads are muddy.
